Alison and Mark, The Hotel

Party season is in full swing, but the biggest night of the year is just on the horizon: for an all-new series of The Hotel which return to Channel 4 on 28th December 2014!

To celebrate this (oh, and the New Year festivities that are apparently also soon), hotel legend Mark Jenkins, with his friend and former colleague Alison Pennell, have chosen their top songs for getting a party started.

Series 4 of The Hotel heads back to Torquay as hapless Hotelier Mark returns for one summer season in a role as Entertainments Manager at The Cavendish Hotel, just metres away from his former haunt The Grosvenor. His old pal Alison pops in for support (and gentle ridiculing) along the way.

For the task of choosing music for a party, Mark has used his experience of over 30 years in the hospitality and events sector to pick songs including 'Macarena' and 'Hi Ho Silver Lining'. Thankfully, Alison was on hand with a selection of other songs. Together they’ve chosen 50 of the best party classics, with everything from One Direction to The Village People.

This once-in-a-lifetime compilation is not available in any stores, but can be found on Spotify. Visit Channel4.com/thehotel or head to Channel 4's Spotify (opens in a new window) to add this to your collection today.

Mark: “I don’t think I understand this Spotify thing. Is it like a mix-tape but for iPods? We’ve just picked the songs, and some geeks at Channel 4 have done the technical part.”

Alison: “Mark has absolutely terrible taste in music so blame all the naff songs on him.”

Mark: “It’s an all-ages mix of songs. Alison can have her One Directions and Beyoncés. I’ve been in the hotel business for over three decades and people always love the classics: ‘Agadoo’, ‘Y.M.C.A.’, and ‘Dancing Queen’.”

Alison: “I think if there is a theme, it’s sing-along songs that your gran will like and that the kids will like as well. I suppose you can’t go wrong with the songs that have dance moves.”

Mark: “I love ‘Y.M.C.A.’ but I can’t seem to do the arm actions, where you’re meant to spell out the letters. Maybe I’ve got dyslexic arms!”

Alison: “You picked ‘It’s Raining Men’ as well. Is there something you’re trying to tell us, Mark?”

Mark: “It’s another great song. I always feel like I shouldn’t be joining in because I’m not a woman and I’m not gay!”

Alison: “But guests do love it. When I’m out with all the girls we love it when ‘Club Tropicana’ comes on.”

Mark: “I don’t like that one because I don’t like people hearing the words ‘drinks are free’. It’s the stuff of nightmares for a hotelier.”

Alison: “No, we all know what you’re like. ‘Tonight we’re gonna party like it’s £19.99’! I picked Prince in tribute to you.”

Mark: “Another classic, all-age floor filler is ‘Come On Eileen’. I can remember when it first came out and lots of nightclubs banned it because people got so excited. When they heard it they started fighting and smashing the places up!”

Alison: “You don’t want that at a New Year’s party!”

Mark: “Well, I often played it on Party Nights to the pensioners in The Grosvenor, and never had a problem!”

Alison: “Do you think people up and down the country will be listening to the songs we picked at their New Year’s parties? Seeing in 2015 with DJ Mark and DJ Alison?”

Mark: “To be honest, I think they’ll all be too sloshed to notice what they’re listening to.”

Alison: “I’ll drink to that.”
